tim hortons in new york

Tim HortonsNow first I will regrettably state that I am a Starbucks guy.  I like a good Tim Hortons coffee every once in a while, but Starbucks is my first love.  However, that being said I find the news that famed Canadian doughnut chain Tim Hortons is opening 12 locations across Manhattan and Brooklyn very exciting… as it is obviously our first step in taking over the United States… get them hooked on our coffee!

There is really nothing more Canadian than Tim Hortons, I would say it’s almost as Canadian as the beaver or ice hockey.  ‘Rolling up the Rim to Win’ is just as Canadian as singing the National Anthem.  And I always feel a little bit of pride when something that is very “Canadian” makes its way into the culture of other countries, kind of like Roots clothing line did after the Nagano Olympics.

Tim Hortons has bought 12 Dunkin’ Donut stores throughout New York City and will be opening to serve Double Double’s to New Yorkers as early as today.  They will also open 3 more stores inside Cold Stone Creamery ice-cream outlets (3 of 40 planned combined stores that will be opening across the US this year)… yum!  And the Canadian franchise is getting some good media attention in NYC as well (which can be difficult to get considering it feels like there are more coffee shops and doughnut chains than people in that city).  The New York Daily News described the chain to its readers as being “famed in Canada for its maple-glazed donuts and ‘double double’ coffee with two creams, two sugars.” And the New York Times called Timmy’s “an invader from the north in New York City’s next battle of the doughnut chains.”

So I guess only time will tell if Timmy’s makes it in New York… although they already have over 500 stores throughout the US and have been there since 1984 so I guess saying these 12 New York stores are “cracking” the market is a bit of an overstatement.  But needless to say opening a store in New York is kind of like winning the gold medal for doughnut shops so I think it is really cool that you will be able to get a little bit of Canadian heritage in the most American city in the USA.

Cheers!
