With 99 days to go until the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, VANOC has taken one more step in decorating our city. One of the most recognizable symbols in the world, the Olympic rings, will now be on display in Coal Harbour for everyone from the Bentall Building to the top of Grouse Mountain to see!
These 45 feet high LED illuminated rings sit atop a barge in the middle of Coal Harbour just out from the brand new Vancouver Convention Centre. The location was picked because the Vancouver Convention Centre will be where all the media (and their cameras) will hang out and the shoreline surrounding Coal Harbour will also be a high traffic area for athletes and tourists alike. One other benefit to having the rings in the middle of the water is that unless you have scuba gear and can get around the security boats guarding it, defacing the rings as an Olympic protest is going to be really hard.
VANOC wanted to show off their Olympic green initiative by making the rings out of thousands of tiny LED lights. These lights consume approximately eight per cent of the electricity that an equivalent incandescent bulb would. And not only do the lights need less energy but according to Premier Gordon Campbell the rings can be programmed to create complex light shows and anytime a Canadian athlete wins a medal they will put on a special light display to let everyone around them know.
These are the second set of LED Olympic Rings currently in Vancouver, the other set has been in place for a little while now at Vancouver International Airport… not a bad way to welcome tourists!
